Basic Elastomers:

Burning Test of various elastomers

  • Nitrile (NBR): It burns with a sooty flame leaving an untolerable smell.
  • EPDM: Burns readily with a sooty flame leaving a dry & waxy odour.
  • BUTYL (IIR): Burns readily with a phenolic odour and if colour tested sith Pyrolysate, it will give a positive test.
  • Neoprene (CR): It burns with a sparkling flame with HCL orour and if tested with Copper (Heat the Copper and touch to the sample) the flame will glow green.
  • Fluorocarbon (Fpm): It burns and leaves an acrid HF odour and it can easily be found out due to its higher density than other Elastomers (VITON).
  • Natural Rubber (NR): It burns continuously and becomes sticky and leaves a black patch on the holding portion.
  • Polyurethene (AU.Eu): It burns and melts leaving drops continuously.
  • Silicone (Q.MQ.MVQ): It burns with a white flame giving white smoke (No other Elastomer gives white smoke) smelling like bitter almond.

Acryl Nitrile Butadiene Rubber (NBR):

NBR has good mechanical Properties in comparison with other Elastomers and a particularly ghi Wear Resistance.

COMPATIBLE WITH:

  • Aliphatic Hydrocarbons (Propane,Butane, petroleum Oil, Mineral Oil and grease, Diesel, Fuel, Fuel Oils) * Vegetable and Mineral Oils & Grease
  • HFA, HFB and HFC - Fluids
  • Many diluted Acids, Alkalies, Salt Solutions at low temperatures
  • Water (Special Compounds upto + 100oC).

NOT COMPATIBLEWITH:

  • Fuels with high Aromatic contents (for Super Fuels a Special Compound must be used)
  • Aromatic Hydrocarbons (Benzol)
  • Chlorinate (Trichloroethylene)
  • Polar Solvents (Ketone, Acetone, Acetic Acid, Ethyelene, Ester)
  • Strong Acids
  • Brake Fluids on Glyson base
  • Ozone, Ageing & Weather Resistant.

Ethylene Propylene Dion Rubber (EPDM):

EPDM is a Rubber manufactured as a Co-polymer of Ethylene and Propylene

COMPATIBLE WITH:

  • Hot Water and Stream upto + 150oC, Special Comouns upto + 200oC
  • Brake Fluids on Glycol base upto + 150oC
  • Many Organic and Unorganic Acids
  • Cleaning Agents, Natron and Kali-Alkalies.
  • Hydraulic Fluids based on Phosphate-Ester (HFD-R)
  • Silicone Oil and Grease
  • Many Polar Solvents (Alcohol, Ketone, Ester)
  • Skydrol 500 and 7000
  • Ozone, Ageing & Weather Resistant.

NOT COMPATIBLEWITH:

  • Mineral Oil Products (Oil, Grease and Fuel).

Butyl Rubber (IIR):

Butyl has a low Gas permeability rate and good Electrical Properties.

COMPATIBLE WITH:

  • AHot Water and Stream Upto + 130oC
  • Brake Fluids on glycol base
  • Many Acids
  • Salt Solutions
  • Polar Solvents e.g. Alcohol, Ketone and Ester
  • Hydraulic Fluides based on Poly-Glycol (HFC-Fluids) and Phosphate-Ester (HFD-R-Fluids)
  • Silicone Oil and Grease
  • Skydrol 500 and 7000
  • Ozone, Ageing and Weather Resistant.

NOT COMPATIBLEWITH:

  • Mineral Oil and Grease
  • Fuels
  • Cholorinated Hydrocarbons.

Chloroprene (Neoprene) Rubber (Cr):

Chloroprene was the first Synthetic Rubber and shows in general good Ozone, Ageing and Chemical Resistance, acceptable Oil Resistance and good Mechanical Properties over a wide temperature range.

COMPATIBLE WITH:

  • Mineral Oil Paraffin base with low DVI e.g. ASTM Oil No.1
  • Silicone Oil and Grease
  • Water and Water Solvents at low temperatures
  • refrigerants (Ammonia, Carbondioxide, FreonO
  • Improved Ozone, Ageing and Weather Resistance in comparison with NBR.

NOT COMPATIBLEWITH:

  • Aromatic Hydrocarbons (Benzene)
  • Chlorinated Hydrocarbons (Trichloroethylene)
  • Polar Solvents (Ketone, Ester, Ether, Acetone)

Fluorocarbon Rubber (FPM) (VITON):

FPM has an excellent Resistance to High Temperatures, Ozone, Oxygen, Mineral Oil, Synthetic Hydraulic Fluids, Fuels, Aromatics & many Organic Solvents and Chemicals.

COMPATIBLE WITH:

  • Mineral Oil and Grease, Low Swelling in ASTM Oil No. 1-3
  • Non-flammable Hydraulic Fuels in theground HFD
  • Silicone Oil and Grease
  • Mineral Oil, Vegetable Oil and Grease & Alphatic Hydrocarbons ( Butane, Propane Fuel, Natural Gas)
  • Aromatic Hydrocarbons (Benzene, Toluene)
  • Chlorinated Hydrocarbons (Trichloroethylenr and Carbon Tetrachloride)
  • Fuels
  • Fuels with Metganol content
  • High Vacuum
  • Very good Ozone, Ageing and Weather Resistance.

NOT COMPATIBLEWITH:

  • Polar Solvents (Acetane, Methyl Ether, Ketone, Ethyl Acetate, DiethylEther, Dioxane)
  • Skydro 500 and 7000
  • Brake Fluide on Glycol base
  • Ammonia Gas, Amine, Alkalies
  • Superheated Steam
  • Low Molecular organic Acids (Formic and Acetic).

Fluorosilicone Rubber (MFQ):

MFQ contains Trifloropropyl groups next to the Methyl group. The Mechanical and Physical properties are very similar to those of MVQ.

COMPATIBLE WITH:

  • As per MVQ plus also compatible with
  • Aromatic Mineral Oil (e.g. ASTM Oil No.3)
  • Fuels
  • Low Molecular Aromatic hydrocarbons (e.g. Benzene, Toluene).

Polyurethene Rubber (AU.EU):

Polyurethene Elastomers demonstrate, in comparison with all other Elastomers, an Excellent Wear Resistance, High Tensile Strength and High Elasticity.

COMPATIBLE WITH:

  • Pure Aliphatic Hydrocarbons (Propane, Butane, Fuel) but Impurities (such as Moisture, Alcohol, Acid or Alkaline connection) can cause chemical attack on the Polyurethene
  • Mineral Oil and Grease (Particular Additives can attack the Compound chemically)
  • Silicone Oil Grease * Water upto + 50oC
  • Ozone and Ageing Resistant.

NOT COMPATIBLEWITH:

  • Ketone, Esther, Alcohol, Glycol
  • Hot Water, Steam, Alkalies, Amino Acid.

Silicone Rubber (Q.MQ.MVQ):

The term Silicone Rubber covers a large group of materials in which Methyl Vinyl Silicone (MVQ) is the main. Silicone Elastomers as a group have relatively poor Tensile Strength and poor Wear & Tear Resistance. However, they have many Special Properties. Silicone in general has good Heat Resistance upto + 230oC and good Cold Flexibility upto -60oC, good Weather Resistance and good Insulating and Physiologically Neutral Properties.

COMPATIBLE WITH:

  • SNF Engine Transmission Oil (e.g. ASTM Oil No.1)
  • Animal and Vegetable Oil and Grease
  • Brake Fluid (Non-petroleum base)
  • Fire Resistant Hydraulic Fluid, HFD-S (e.g. Clophene) Cholorodiphenyl (incl. Flame-resistant Insulators, Solutions, Coolants for Tranformers)
  • Water upto + 100oC 8 Diluted Salt Solutions
  • Ozone, Agening and Weather Resistant.

NOT COMPATIBLEWITH:

  • Superheated Water/Steam over + 120oC
  • Acids and Alkalies
  • Silicone Oil & Grease
  • Low Molecular Chlorinated Hydrocarbons (e.g. Trichloroethylene) Aromatic Mineral Oil
  • Fuels
  • Aromatic Hydrocarbons (e.g. Toluene).
  • Fuels with high Aromatic contents (for Super Fuels a Special Compound must be used)
  • Aromatic Hydrocarbons (Benzol)
  • Chlorinate (Trichloroethylene)
  • Polar Solvents (Ketone, Acetone, Acetic Acid, Ethyelene, Ester)
  • Strong Acids
  • Brake Fluids on Glyson base
  • Ozone, Ageing & Weather Resistant.
